Long-exposure, time-exposure, or slow-shutter photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements.

  • Smart Phone (With long exposure app, eg Light Painting)
  • Light Source
    • Beavers and Cubs – Glow Sticks
    • Scouts and Explorers – Sparklers
Instructions
  1. Install and open up the app, set the duration to 10s, the other setting can be set to auto.
  2. Ask a family member to take the picture, (or use the timer function)
  3. When they start draw out the image, letter or symbol you want.
  4. Experiment with the duration and the speed you draw the image.
  5. When happy save the photo, if you want share it with us on Facebook
Hints
  • If your pictures are a little light/washed-out make sure you are doing it in a room that is really dark also wear dark clothing.
  • Rest the phone/camera on a table to keep it steady, if you have a tripod even better.
  • Use coloured sweet wrappers to add coloured lines with a touch
  • Hold a glow stick sideways to make cool Calligraphy/Italic style words.
  • Get your family to help you write multiple letters to make words
