Adult Volunteers

At Scouts we celebrate difference and welcome everyone.

Whatever your background, identity or ability, there’s a volunteer spot with your name on it.

Volunteering can be a brilliant way to boost your mental wellbeing. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life, and you might even learn a lot about yourself along the way.

Scouts can make you feel good in other ways too. We’ll guide you to an opportunity where you’ll:

  • Make friends and meet people
  • Try new things and challenge yourself
  • Get outdoors and get stuck in
  • Positively impact your community
  • Create vital opportunities for young people
  • Make memories that’ll last a lifetime

If you can only occasionally help, that’s OK. Whether you’d like to be an activity planner, tea-maker or craft creator, we appreciate any time you can spare.

Ways to help?

There are two main ways you can help volunteer at scouts, the obvious way is volunteering directly with young people by supporting the section leadership teams by helping at meetings, events and activties. The other way which is just as important is supporting Scouting behind the scenes as part of Scout Active Support.

What is the Scout Active Support?

Scout Active Support is a group of adults who have one thing in common – a wish to support Scouting.

The aim of the Scout Active Support is to “Provide Active Support” (the clue is in the name!), with the emphasis being very much on supporting the youth programme in an active manner, at all levels of the Association from the local Scout Group to National level.

If you have never been involved in Scouting before; we are split into ‘Sections’ from the youngest in Squirrels to the eldest (adult) Section at 18 – 24, called Network.

So what do we mean by “Active Support”?

Active Support encompasses the talents of the Scout Active Support of all ages and abilities, whether it is physical, mental, geared to a particular technical skill or general support.

As Scouts transforms we will see our people move to ‘teams’ and in these teams you may:

  • Assist as a badge examiner,
  • Be an advisor in the training team,
  • Find yourself at the beautiful Huish Woods as part of the maintenance team,
  • Assisting with our ‘Adventurous Activities’, on the water, climbing, Duke of Edinburgh, hill walking and Ten Tors
  • Helping with the running of our District and Groups by being a Trustee or Fundraiser

We all have something to offer as far as supporting Scouting is concerned, whatever our age or ability. The Scout Active Support is a large part of the ‘backbone’ of the Scout Movement – supporting the young people and voluntary leaders wherever help is required. The key to our success is our flexibility – we’re here to help
