Macramé is a form of textile produced using knotting (rather than weaving or knitting) techniques. The primary knots of macramé are the square (or reef knot) and forms of “hitching”: various combinations of half hitches.

Instructions
- Choose a type of thread to use. Thicker rope is better for wall displays and furnishings, while string and cord are better for small gifts or decorations.
- Think about what design you are going to make with your cord. Use coloured pens or pencils and some scrap paper to sketch your ideas.
- You will need an item to tie your cord around. This is the base of the design. You could use the pencil you have just drawn the design with, or a stick from outside if you still need to draw. Look for spare items like hoops or handles that could make for interesting shapes.
- There are different kinds of knots that can be used to make macramé. Some connect the threads together and some make patterns across or along the different threads. Go online and check out some instructional videos on how to make different kinds of macramé.
