There are currently a range of exciting opportunities available within the District, all to help deliver and support Scouting to our Young People.

Each require different skill sets so depending on your own abilities and ambitions some will appeal more than others. You may also know someone else that would be ideal for one or more of the roles. Please note that all roles will require holding a Scouting DBS and completion of some training (role dependent).

ADC (Scouts)

The ADC (Scouts) is a vital role within the District Team, working with the District Commissioner to ensure the effective operation of the Scout Section across the District. A general role description can be found here, however the role can be individually tailored depending on the needs and experience of the candidate.

We are fortunate to have two existing District Scout Leaders who will support you in all aspects of the role. They are particularly experienced in organising and running regular District Scout events including Orienteering, Ten Pin Bowling, Archery Field Shoot and Activities Camp, the latter being one of the highlights of the whole District calendar!

We are proud to have a very active Scout Section within Blackdown, however there remains huge opportunity to grow this further with the successful appointment of somebody to this role.

District Scout Network Commissioner

This is an exciting and transformational time for Scout Network in Blackdown, with the right candidate having the opportunity to make a significant difference in this role. In return you will receive invaluable support and guidance from the whole District Team.

Scout Network is the fifth and final section of the Scouting family, giving those aged 18-25 the opportunity to continue Scouting with an emphasis on personal development and having fun. Scout Network members take part in a variety of activities, which they undertake and organise themselves under the leadership of a District Scout Network Commissioner. For more information, please take a look at the general role description here.

District Youth Commissioner

As a member of the District Leadership Team the District Youth Commissioner works in partnership with the District Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Executive Committee. The role is to ensure that young people from 6-25 years are involved and engaged in every decision that shapes their Scouting experience in Blackdown and to empower young people to share their ideas and have a meaningful voice in planning, implementing and reviewing their programme and opportunities.

A detailed role description, including what we’re looking for, can be found here, however it is only a guide and specific responsibilities can be discussed with the District Commissioner.

If you can champion, encourage and lead others to ensure that Scouting in Blackdown is shaped by young people in partnership with adults, YOU could be the YOUTH in our Youth Commissioner!

The appointment is for 3 years and we are looking for somebody to take up post ASAP, so please contact us at the earliest opportunity for an informal discussion. You must be between 18-25 years old on appointment.

Deputy District Youth Commissioner

As a member of the District Team, the Deputy District Youth Commissioner works with the Youth Commissioner, District Commissioner and the District Team to ensure that young people are involved and engaged in making decisions that shape their Scouting experience within the District. To empower young people to share their ideas and have a meaningful voice in planning, implementing and reviewing their programme and opportunities. To be the voice of youth-led scouting in the District; supporting groups and the District in developing a youth-shaped focus. Please find an individually tailored role description here.

The appointment is for 3 years and we are looking for somebody to take up post ASAP, so please contact us at the earliest opportunity for an informal discussion. You must be between 18-25 years old on appointment.

District Cub Leaders

To support the ADC (Cub Scouts) in the effective operation of the Cub Scout section. A great alternative to a weekly group commitment.

Appointments Advisory Committee (AAC) Members

The District has a small pool of adults who interview potential Leaders and those changing roles. These volunteers come from within Scouting, but also the wider community with ‘organisational’ or HR backgrounds.

Huish Woods Active Support

The crew is highly visible when helping with car parking at big events at the Campsite, but there are wide-ranging opportunities to support the site which are not always so high profile. For instance, on Wednesday mornings some members spend a couple of hours helping with site maintenance – no two weeks are ever the same! Tasks are definitely not limited to Wednesdays and we would happily see anyone any day if they can spare time for pruning back hedges, clearing leaves, repairing fences, painting, moving logs, etc. These are ideal roles for anyone who fancies spending some quality time in a lovely location! Please spread this around to anyone you know that has time on their hands!

Media Team Members

If you are interested in video editing, photography, journalism, radio, social media etc we want to hear from you! We are actively looking to form a media team to help promote Scouting in Blackdown. Please contact us at media-blackdown@somersetscouts.org.uk for more information.

Please contact Blackdown District Commissioner, Pam Gaines via dc-blackdown@somersetscouts.org.uk or 01984 624657 / 07855 125877 for a more detailed discussion on any of the above roles.

Please help us to support Scouting in Blackdown.
