Somerset Explorer Young Leader Weekend 2-3 March 2019

Dear All,

The next Young Leader training weekend is 2-3 March 2019.

The format of the weekend will be similar to previous weekends. The modules covered will include:

  • Module A Prepare for Take-off!
  • Module B Taking The Lead
  • Module E Game on!
  • Module G What is a high quality programme?
  • Module H Programme Planning
The Young Leader social/training weekends are designed to support any existing training within Units.  They are a great opportunity to meet other Young Leaders from other groups, make new friends and there will be plenty of down time too.  The Modules are run during the day, with a meal during Saturday evening and followed by a wide game – weather permitting.  The weekends are now designed so you only need to complete three weekends if you wish to complete all your modules this way.  The weekend is fully catered for and you only need to turn up with your sleeping bag, tent, etc.  Many Young Leaders say they have gained confidence and lots of new ideas to take back to their Units.

For those wishing to complete Module A only the module is usually held at 10am on the Sunday morning and Young Leaders are welcome to attend for just this session.

The weekend will take place at Huish Woods Scout Campsite, West Hatch, Taunton, TA3 5RH. It is also fully catered. The cost is £20. Applications are welcome from all those taking part in the Young Leaders Scheme. The weekend is normally very popular, so early booking is recommended. The health and consent form can be downloaded here.

The closing date for applications is Friday 22 February 2019. It would be preferred that booking is done by email. The health/consent form is in Word format so that it can be typed into. We especially need to know about dietary requirements and the like before the weekend. Please email to explorers@somersetscouts.org.uk. Payment can be made on the weekend. Email address for booking and enquiries is Tracey Hyman explorers@somersetscouts.org.uk.

Participants should arrive at 9am on the Saturday and we will be finished at 3pm on the Sunday. They will need to bring a tent, uniform (for Saturday evening only), warm sleeping kit, blanket, pillow, torch, indoor and outdoor clothing, and footwear. I have deliberately not included a kit list, but if unsure please get in touch. You may want to bring indoor footwear (ie crocs, slippers, trainers) as the floor in The Govett Hall can be cold.

In the last weekend we included some activities that young leaders could use with their sections to encourage Youth Shaped Scouting. If anyone has a particular module or something else they feel they need please let me know as we could accommodate this in this or future weekends.

Kind Regards,

Peter Sampson
